Before Writer/Director Rick King conceived of the iconic POINT BREAK (1991) he made HOTSHOT (1986) starring Pelé and Jim Youngs brought the sport to American audiences in a way they'd never experienced - a story about a home grown soccer star.

Produced by Quentin Tarantino and Jack Auen, Rockwell’s THE PROJECTIONIST follows a reclusive projectionist who is haunted by a wrongful conviction and the loss of his wife. MovieTown catches up with indie film producer extraordinaire, Ted Hope, as he takes over Market Monday at the 2026 ‪SlamDance Film Festival to present "19 Dangerous Ideas to the Broken Cinema Ecosystem."

Love and Adult Films are in the air this month as MovieTown sits down with Podcaster/Writer, Molly Lambert to talk about her latest series, JENNAWORLD, that takes on the career of Jenna Jameson, the San Fernando Valley's most famous industry and the crossover between Porn and Hollywood.

MovieTown’s ‘No Horror November” Recs

Last month was a lot of horror. To seek balance in the world I put together 11 non-horror film recs at 11 different theaters to celebrate the 11th month of the year.

MovieTown heads to the grand Texas Theatre ‪in Dallas to talk with filmmaker & artist Harrod Blank on the 10th anniversary screening of his father Les Blank's masterpiece, A POEM IS A NAKED PERSON

Harrod spills about growing up with a famous filmmaker father and how he balances preserving Les Blank's legacy with his own documentary projects.

We get into Harrod's life long obsesssion with art cars, captured in his feature films WILD WHEELS and AUTOMORPHOSIS, along with the construction of ART CAR WORLD in Douglas, Arizona.

He touches on his 30 years in the making Burning Man documentary and ruminate on the concept of time and patience in artistic pursuits.

MovieTown visits the Texas Theatre to talk with Creative Director and Co-Owner, Jason Reimer, about how he found himself running a revival cinema in Dallas struggling to get five people to show up for a Kurosawa series on 16mm to being one of the jewels in the U.S, arthouse scene.

Horror fan or not, this list is what makes October special here in Los Angeles and truly is a full on celebration of cinema. My “regular” monthly recs featured in the last post are what you’ll encounter 99% of the time on the revival scene, great film screenings with great crowds. This list takes it up a notch—these are parties, events and special outings we only get in October. I encourage even the horror-shy to peruse because there’s bound to be a costume party or live score that intrigues (maybe not a 12 hour horror marathon (you know, work up to it next year), or I’ve got a couple Counter Programming recs for those that need a break from the blood, death and gore of it all.

It’s indisputable at this point that October has become by far the biggest revival cinema month of the year - not that it’s going to be every cinephile’s favorite month though. If you don’t like horror, it’s going to be a tough stretch and November 1st won’t come soon enough. I do sympathize with the sentiment – it’s not like we have a dearth of horror in general on the revival scene, and it’s the dominant genre out there, if there is one. What wins me over for the near- monopoly across theater screens in October is the creativity, the deep cuts, and the general excitement at any given screening.
